What Happens at Your First Assessment Appointment at GD Health?
Your first assessment at GD Health is a 30-45 minute appointment where a clinician examines the joint or area that's bothering you, asks about how the pain behaves day to day, and — if it would actually change the plan — scans it with diagnostic ultrasound. You leave with a clear picture of what's going on and a straight answer on what's worth trying next, whether that's physiotherapy, a guided injection or shockwave therapy. There's no obligation to book anything else.
Why an assessment comes before any treatment
Joint and tendon pain in people over 40 rarely has one single cause. Knee pain can be arthritis, it can be a meniscus issue, it can be referred from the hip. Shoulder pain that feels like "frozen shoulder" sometimes isn't. Guessing wastes time and money, so every new patient at GD Health starts with an assessment rather than being booked straight onto a course of treatment.
This matters most for higher-cost options. Shockwave therapy, for example, is a course of 4-6 sessions — you want to know it's the right tool for a stubborn tendon before committing to it, not after session two.
What actually happens in the appointment
- History first. When the pain started, what makes it worse, what's already been tried (painkillers, physio, rest), and how it's affecting daily life or sport.
- Physical examination. Range of movement, strength, and the specific movements or positions that reproduce the pain.
- Scan, if it changes the answer. GD Health is the only clinic in south Cumbria with diagnostic ultrasound on site, so if imaging would clarify what's going on — a partial tendon tear versus general wear, for instance — it can be done there and then rather than a separate referral.
- A plan, in plain terms. What's likely causing the pain, what the realistic options are, and what each one involves — cost, number of sessions, what to expect. No pressure to decide on the spot.
What the assessment can lead to
Depending on what's found, the plan might be:
- Physiotherapy — for mechanical issues that respond to movement, strengthening and load management.
- Shockwave therapy (Barrow only, £80 per session, course of 4-6 sessions roughly 7-10 days apart) — for stubborn tendon problems like tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis or shoulder tendinopathy that haven't settled with rest or physio alone.
- A steroid injection — for inflamed structures like a frozen shoulder or an irritated bursa, given under ultrasound-guided injection so it's placed exactly where it's needed.
- A hyaluronic acid injection — for degenerative joints, mainly knees and hips, in people looking to manage arthritis and stay active without surgery.
- Nothing at all, for now — sometimes the honest answer is that the joint needs time, and the assessment says so rather than selling a course of treatment that isn't needed.
None of this is promised in advance — the assessment is what decides which of these, if any, is appropriate for you.
Who it's for
Most people booking an assessment are 40 and over, dealing with arthritis or persistent tendon pain, and trying to stay active or avoid — or at least delay — a joint replacement. Some come with a specific worry (a knee that's been getting steadily worse, a shoulder that won't lift properly); others just know something's wrong and want a straight answer rather than another round of guessing.
Barrow and Millom
Assessments run at both GD Health locations — FAB Health and Fitness club, Hollywood Park in Barrow-in-Furness, and 12 Wellington Street in Millom — so it's a short trip whether you're coming from Barrow itself, Dalton-in-Furness, Ulverston, Askam or elsewhere in south Cumbria. Shockwave therapy specifically only runs from the Barrow site; ultrasound scanning and guided injections are available at both.
FAQs
How long does the first appointment take?
Around 30-45 minutes, depending on how much the history and examination throw up.
Will I need a scan at my first appointment?
Only if it would actually change the plan. Plenty of assessments are decided on history and examination alone; the ultrasound is there when it's useful, not as a routine add-on.
Do I need a GP referral?
No — you can book an assessment directly.
What does the first appointment cost?
See current pricing — it's asked about often enough that it's worth checking before you book.
What if the assessment finds nothing needs treating yet?
Then that's what you're told. The point of the appointment is an honest answer, not a sale.
